Black and Latino : Why pick?

I teared up a bit at some point watching this video. Not because this is a sad story, but, I guess, because we're in 21st century and "difference" is still not the standard.

Even though I'm not from Latin America, all my life I've had to answer that question. Most of the time, i felt that I disappointed the person asking me the question because they assumed I was something else.

The good thing is that I can see the world changing little by little. Difference is becoming a strength and is generating positive reactions. We're all humans, aren't we!

Melissa Harris Perry- How black hair matters (Part I)

This issue is quite interesting. As a mixed girl, I am deeply touched by the issue of "hair". Someone caucasian would probably not understand, though they might have passed judgment or opinion on how black hair looks like naturally.

In any case, in my journey of self-discovery, I've come to terms with my type of hair. Having daughters have emphasized that need even more because of the psychological impact of hair in black or mixed little girls. A couple of months ago, my eldest - who I believe has the most beautiful head of hair, came home from school saying that she wanted blond, straight hair like one of her friends from school. We just happened to be watching Disney's Tangled and Rapunzel's hair came up, once again as a topic.

Today was hair wash day for my two girls, and the same topic came up again. So, I'm realizing that even little girls are inclined to notice these things and that a mother's role is to take the matter into her own hands to ensure that such gorgeous girls as mine come to term with the fact that they are indeed beautiful, with their hair as thick and curly and frizzy as it is. Thankfully, making my own skin and hair care line of all natural ayurvedic products has helped tremendously. Now, I don't have to wonder what to put and why anymore. Now, I just have to teach my children that taking care of their beauty is a daily task and a labor of patience and (self- ) love!
